The Motorcycle Handbook's normal following answer is 2 seconds. The general Driver's Handbook often teaches a 3-second gap for cars. Answer the vehicle and scenario named in the question.
Hill parking — leave the motorcycle in gear

Speed + lights
- NUMBER15 mph at a blind intersection and in an alley. 15 mph within 100 feet of an uncontrolled railroad crossing when you cannot see the tracks for 400 feet in both directions.
- NUMBERUsual school-zone limit is 25 mph within 500 feet of a school while children are outside or crossing. Obey any lower posted 15 or 20 mph school-zone limit.
- LIGHTDim within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle and within 300 feet when following another vehicle.
- LIGHTUse low beams in adverse weather and whenever wipers are required for fog, rain, or snow.
- NIGHTHeadlights are required from 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise — the same window that legally defines “night” for a permit’s no-night restriction.
Special rules
- NUMBEREnter a center left-turn lane within 200 feet of the turn. A vehicle may enter a bike lane no more than 200 feet before a right turn, after checking for bicyclists.
- NUMBEROn a two-lane road where passing is unsafe, a slow vehicle must use a turnout when five or more vehicles are following.
- NUMBERLeave at least 3 feet when passing a bicyclist. If you cannot, wait until you can pass safely.
- SPECIALSchool bus flashing yellow: slow and prepare to stop. Flashing red: stop from either direction until the lights stop, except when the bus is across a divided or multilane highway with 2+ lanes each way.
- SPECIALNever begin a railroad crossing unless there is room to clear every track completely. Stop at least 15 feet away when warning devices or a person signal an approaching train.
- EMERGENCYMove over and slow down for stationary emergency, tow, road-work, and other qualifying vehicles displaying warning lights.
- PARKINGHill parking: downhill, front wheel toward the curb; uphill with a curb, wheel away from it; no curb, wheel toward the road edge. On the motorcycle, leave it in gear.
- CURBCurb colors: red = no stopping; white = passenger pickup/drop-off; green = limited time; yellow = loading; blue = disabled placard or plates.
